Merideth Owens, MS, LPC, EMDR Trained

My name is Merideth Owens, and I would love to help you, your child, or your family in the process of healing and growth. I am passionate about the therapeutic power of loving families and close relationships, as well as the importance of self-acceptance and self-compassion in all stages of life. I am currently taking new clients, and I am eager to help children, adults, couples, and families lead happy lives with healthy connections.

I am currently a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Washington, and I hold a Master of Science degree in Professional Counseling from Texas A&M University Corpus Christi with an emphasis in Marriage, Couples, and Family Counseling. I specialize in play therapy under the supervision of Julie Thigpen, LPC- Supervisor, RPT- Supervisor. In my play therapy work, I operate from a primarily child-centered theoretical orientation. This means I believe in a child-directed play process that allows the child to use the toys and space freely to build self-esteem, appropriately express emotions, and engage in healthy, productive coping skills.

I have several other areas of focus as well. I strongly believe that children are the future, but good parents are the future of those children. So, my counseling work has been focused on supporting and empowering pregnant individuals and new parents as they navigate the journey of child-rearing. I have experience working with couples, both parenting and non-parenting, and I am Level I Certified in Gottman Couples Counseling.

I am also a military spouse who has experienced the emotional turbulence that life in the Armed Forces can bring, and I am highly motivated to support others in this population. I have worked with individuals struggling with past trauma, anxiety, depression, and other issues, and I work primarily from the frameworks of person-centered counseling and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help my clients work through difficult experiences and come out stronger. I am an open and accepting counselor, and I am passionate about empowering minority groups including the BIPOC, AAPI, and LGBTQ+ communities.

When I’m not working with clients, you can find me baking and decorating cakes, playing instruments, trying new restaurants, spending time at the beach, and performing onstage in plays and musicals at Harbor Playhouse and Aurora Arts Theater.
